Koh Phangan is far more than the famous Full Moon Party. Staying at 5 Elements Villa on Tong Lang Beach in the quieter north-west of the island puts you within easy reach of the islands best beaches, wellness experiences, snorkeling spots, hiking trails and culinary highlights. This guide covers what most travellers come back for.
Beaches and snorkeling
Tong Lang Beach. The private bay directly below the villa is one of the islands premier snorkeling spots, with healthy reef close to shore and turquoise water sheltered from the trade winds. Equipment is on site at the villa.
Mae Haad and Koh Ma. A 5-minute drive west of the villa. A natural sand bar leading out to the small island of Koh Ma at low tide, with one of the islands best snorkeling reefs. Bring fins.
Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat). Accessible only by long-tail boat from Chaloklum or by jungle hike. Remote, white-sand, family-friendly. Half-day excursion.
Haad Salad and Haad Yao. Wider beaches with restaurants, sun loungers and laid-back beach bars. 10 to 15 minutes by car.
Wellness, yoga and retreats
Koh Phangan has become one of South East Asias top wellness destinations. The villa itself includes a yoga sala, ice bath, sauna, steam room and dedicated spa room. For external programmes:
- Agama Yoga (Sri Thanu). One of the worlds longest-running tantra and meditation schools. Drop-in classes plus structured intensives.
- Orion Healing Center. Detox and fasting retreats, raw-food cuisine, colonic therapy.
- The Sanctuary (Haad Tien). Holistic wellness resort with detox programmes, yoga, breathwork.
- Wat Pho Herbal Steam Sauna. Traditional Thai herbal sauna near Ban Tai. Inexpensive local experience.
Adventure and nature
Diving at Sail Rock. One of the top dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand. Whale sharks pass through between February and October. Dive operators in Chaloklum offer day trips with two dives plus lunch.
Khao Ra hike. The islands highest peak at 627 m. Two-hour scenic climb with panoramic views over the entire island and the Gulf. Best done at sunrise.
Phaeng Waterfall and Bottle Beach Viewpoint. Half-day in the jungle interior, easy walking trails, two waterfalls and a panoramic viewpoint over the north coast.
Off-road quad and motorcycle tours. Several local operators run guided trips through the islands interior, jungle tracks and remote viewpoints not reachable by car.
Day trips by boat
Ang Thong Marine Park. A 90-minute boat ride west, a cluster of 42 limestone islands with hidden lagoons, kayaking through sea caves and cliff-top viewpoints. Full-day excursion.
Koh Tao. 90 minutes by speedboat. World-class diving, white-sand beaches and a more rugged, jungle-covered island feel. Day trip or overnight.
Koh Samui. 30 minutes by ferry. Bigger, more developed neighbour island with international shopping, boutique hotels, larger restaurants and the islands airport.
Food and dining
Koh Phangan has more restaurants per capita than any island in the region. From local Thai street kitchens to international fine dining:
- Fisherman's Restaurant (Ban Kai). Beachfront seafood, sunset view, popular for celebrations.
- The Beach Restaurant at Salad Hut. Refined Thai-European fusion on Haad Salad.
- Karma Kafe (Sri Thanu). Health-conscious vegan and raw food, smoothie bowls.
- Three Sixty Bar (Haad Salad). Cocktail bar with 360-degree island view at sunset.
- Local night market in Thong Sala (Saturdays). Street food, crafts, fresh juices.
The villa includes a fully-equipped chef kitchen and on request a private chef can be arranged through booking@5elementsvilla.com.
Events and celebrations
Full Moon Party (Haad Rin). The original. Once a month, attracts 10 to 30 thousand people to the south of the island. Tong Lang is on the opposite side, so the villa stays peaceful while you can join the party at will.
Half Moon, Black Moon, Jungle Experience. Smaller themed parties scheduled around the lunar cycle. More boutique, more intimate.
Private events at the villa. The size of the property, the yoga sala, the chef kitchen and the cliff-front location make 5 Elements Villa well suited for weddings, milestone birthdays, retreats and corporate off-sites. Contact booking@5elementsvilla.com for event planning.
